Getting Out of the Processed Food Rut
Buying Processed Foods:
Now, we all know that processed
foods have tons of sugar, salt, and chemicals, but we feel we "need" to
buy them to keep our families happy and to be able to function. I set a
challenge up for myself - to be able to eliminate one or two unhealthy
and expensive habits and replace them each month. Nice, slow transition
for the family, but I knew it can add up to real savings for us, both
for our health and our pocketbook.
First to go in my home were the frozen waffles. I knew they had
no nutritional value, but it was so much easier to pop them in the
toaster and the kids loved having them around for quick breakfasts.
Another big problem for them was that you would find yourself hungry an
hour later. My solution? I now make a HUGE batch of waffles (I found a
great whole wheat recipe that I altered and now is super yummy but has
oats and wheat germ!) We eat one breakfast with them fresh and then I
break up the rest into 2's and put them in quart ziplock bags in the
freezer. When the kids want waffles for weeks afterwards, they can just
pop them into the toaster to heat them up!
Second, I got away from store bought treats like cookies. I make
up a double batch of cookie dough and ball the cookies just as if I was
getting ready to bake them. I place them on a cookie sheet (close
together but not touching) and place them in the freezer for a couple of
hours. I then take them out and seal them in my vacuum sealer (but you
can always use ziplocks) in batches of 15-20 cookies. When we want a
treat, I can pull them out and pop them in the oven for fresh cookies
anytime!
